Career Guidance
Which ERP course should you learn first? Odoo vs SAP vs Tally
Odoo, SAP and Tally all call themselves ERP — but they lead to very different jobs. Here is how to choose the right starting point for your career.
Almost every student who walks into Educamp X asks the same question: "Which ERP should I learn first?" The honest answer depends on where you are today and where you want to be in three years. These three systems are not competitors — they sit at different levels of the industry, and each one opens a different door.
Tally: the fastest route into accounting jobs
Tally is the accounting backbone of small and medium businesses across Kerala. If you are a commerce student or already handling books for a firm, Tally with GST is the quickest path to employability. You will work with the exact vouchers, ledgers and statutory reports that real companies file every month.
- Best for: freshers, accountants, and anyone handling day-to-day books
- Job roles: accountant, accounts assistant, GST executive
- Time to job-ready: the shortest of the three
Odoo: the complete business suite
Odoo is a full open-source ERP covering sales, purchases, inventory, accounting and manufacturing in one system. Because implementation partners are growing fast across India and the Gulf, trained Odoo functional consultants are in steady demand. It is the right choice if you want to understand how an entire business runs, not just its books.
- Best for: those who want functional consultant or ERP support roles
- Job roles: Odoo functional consultant, implementation support, ERP executive
- Strength: breadth — you touch every department
SAP: the enterprise standard
SAP runs the world's largest companies. Entry is more demanding, but SAP skills carry weight with large corporates, multinationals and Gulf-based enterprises. If your target is a corporate career in finance or operations, SAP is a long-term investment that keeps paying off.
Our practical recommendation
If you need a job soon, start with Tally. If you want consulting breadth, choose Odoo. If you are aiming at large corporates, commit to SAP. Many of our students eventually combine two — Tally plus Power BI, or Odoo plus Excel — and that combination is exactly what employers ask for in interviews.
The right first course is the one that matches your next job, not the biggest name on the brochure.
