Starting a Tally course? What working professionals should check first
Not all Tally training is equal. Use this checklist — built from real hiring conversations — before you enroll anywhere.
Tally remains the single most requested skill in accounting job postings across Kerala. But there is a wide gap between knowing where the buttons are and being trusted with a company's books. Before you enroll anywhere, run your options through this checklist.
1. Is GST taught as filings, not theory?
Ask to see the practical exercises. You should be recording real invoices, generating GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B style summaries, and reconciling them — the way you actually will in the job. If the syllabus stops at "introduction to GST", keep looking.
2. Do you practise on real business documents?
A course built around a fake company with ten neat transactions teaches nothing. Real learning comes from messy data: purchase bills with roundings, partial payments, credit notes, payroll with deductions. That is what the first month of any accounting job actually looks like.
3. Who is teaching you?
This matters more than any other factor. A practicing accountant or certified cost accountant will teach you the exceptions — the reconciliation that never matches, the vendor who sends a bill a month late. A trainer who has only ever taught will teach you the happy path.
- Ask whether the instructor currently works with clients or files real returns
- Ask how payroll, TDS and inventory are covered — these decide employability
- Ask what you will build as a final project, not just what you will watch
4. Is placement support real?
"100% placement assistance" should mean a dedicated team, interview preparation and introductions to local firms — not a WhatsApp group of forwarded vacancies. Ask exactly how the last batch was placed, and for which roles.
Choose the classroom where the instructor's day job is the subject. It shows in every example they give.
